INTERN DIARY: Valentina and Chiara

Hi! We are Chiara and Valentina and we are 19 years old. We are two Italian students who are going to university next year. Thanks to our school in Italy, now we have the opportunity to do an internship at Hilderstone College for 12 weeks. Here we work in different offices like Student Services and Accommodation, Resources, Finance and Marketing. We also help with social media, social activities, students file and personnel matters. in every office we have a mentor who explain to us what we have to do.  So far we have worked only for two weeks but for now it’s very interesting.  Sometimes our tasks are a little bit boring because we have to do a lot of work on the computer.

Thanks to this experience we are learning how to work in an office. We are also improving our English and meeting new friends, from all around the world, among the students.

The college also offers some social activities like sport (football, basketball, tennis and volleyball) or dance or talks about important subjects like politics or geography. There are also some excursions to give the students the opportunity to visit nearby cities and, more generally, England. For example, last weekend we went to London and we visited the British Museum and, on the first Saturday after our arrival in Broadstairs, we went to Canterbury and we visited the Cathedral.

The college is located in Broadstairs, a small town in which there are a lot of events like the fireworks on the beach.

BRIGHTON: One of our favourite Saturday trips

Brighton is a fantastic destination for a day out, with its vibrant cultural mix and its varied arts and music scene. Here you will find modern shopping centres alongside unusual boutiques and small specialist shops in the old, historic lanes of the old town (known as ‘The Lanes’).

Something you really should  see when you visit Brighton is the wonderful pier  which is the one of the best examples remaining in the UK.  With galleries, cafes and entertainment, you can spend a wonderful time here while admiring the views of the city behind you.

You must also visit the amazing Royal Pavilion ,which was built over 200 years ago as a seaside pleasure palace for King George IV, and which mixes the visual styles of India and China in a British royal building. You may love it or hate it, but you certainly won’t forget it!

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD – Tessa Woodward

We are delighted to announce the news of a special award presented to Tessa Woodward, who many of our readers will remember as a key member of the teacher training team at Hilderstone for many years.  Tessa retired from Hilderstone in 2016 but has remained active in the profession, editing the Teacher Trainer and maintaining her connections with professionals from all over the world.

Tessa attended a ceremony in London on 18th June and was presented with the British Council’s Lifetime Achievement Award for 2018.  This is recognition of Tessa’s huge contribution to the profession through her teaching, training of teachers and teacher trainers, writing and publishing activities.  At Hilderstone we are especially grateful to her for the years of service that she gave to the College and the work she did with hundreds of course participants.  Many will also remember the support she gave to dozens of work colleagues in her capacity as the College’s professional development co-coordinator.  All at Hilderstone congratulate her on her fantastic achievement.

HEVER CASTLE, Kent

Hever Castle is in our home county of Kent, about 80 miles/130 km from Broadstairs, so easy for a day out. The castle dates back 700 years in parts, and was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII (He had six in total!). It has 125 acres of beautiful gardens, two mazes and a boating lake, as well as shops and restaurants.

Here is a video of one of our recent day trips there.
